The local children’s charity, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County, is pleased to announce it will now have a Caseworker available in Perth each Wednesday at its new thrift store location, Jewels Gently Used Clothing.

Jewels opened in Perth in June, and is boasting a lovely selection of ladies and children’s fashions, along with books and small household treasures. All items are donated, then sorted and steamed and sold. This is the second location of Jewels, with the original store being in Smiths Falls on William Street.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is not a government funded agency, rather it derives its funding through the supportive community, by running its thrift stores, and by being a United Way agency member. The agency has been serving Lanark County with its mentoring programs for children since 1973, and serves children throughout the County. Mentoring programs include one on one mentoring between an adult and a child, In School Mentoring programs, and small group programs focusing on music, sports, healthy lifestyles, crafts and so much more.

Since opening, the Perth location has brought in great revenue for the agency, and has helped spread awareness about the need for more volunteers in the Perth community. “We are hoping that by also having a Caseworker there every Wednesday that the people in the Perth area will feel even more welcome to come and ask questions and learn how to get involved,” says Program Manager Brad Larocque, “I will personally be there most weeks and would welcome people to drop in to learn more about what we do.”

To donate clothing, explore the store, or find out more about volunteering, please visit the shop at 37B Foster Street. The store is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9am to 5pm. You can also visit the agency web site at www.bigbrothersbigsisterslanark.ca or call 613-283-0570.
