Local Agency Celebrates New Location

Smiths Falls, ON – William Street in Smiths Falls was a happening place last Thursday with the grand opening celebration of the new Big Brothers Big Sisters building and their second hand clothing store Jewels. After many years of renting in LanarkCounty, the not for profit agency bought their own building and moved in just under a month ago.

While the agency is located in SmithsFalls, it serves the entire County, and boasts mentoring programs for over 85 children in Perth, Carleton Place, Almonte, SmithsFalls, and the rural areas of LanarkCounty.

Two months of renovations were followed by an Open House that welcomed the public to view agency displays, enjoy refreshments, and shop at their store with great sale prices. A BBQ was also held, and despite less than perfect weather, over 100 people came out to support the agency and help them celebrate their new space.

A ribbon cutting ceremony with Smiths Falls Mayor Dennis Staples completed the enjoyable day, with Mayor Staples commenting on the positive work of the agency, and welcoming the many families and children who came out for the event.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County does not receive any long term or sustainable government funding, and welcomes donations from the community to keep their programs going. Tax receipts are available, and funds can be directed to certain programs or activities. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for a variety of events hosted by the agency throughout the year.

Mentoring programs offered by the agency help children in LanarkCounty find a supportive and caring adult volunteer. Mentoring is about the power of friendship, and children in the program see real life changing results.
