LanarkCounty: We often hear how great the services are the Big Brothers Big Sisters provides, but sometimes we need to hear that it takes volunteers to make them great – and more volunteers are needed this fall.
The agency has been working in LanarkCounty for over 35 years, and is based out of its office in SmithsFalls. They offer mentoring programs to children, most of whom come from single parent families, and all of whom just need a friend – someone to talk to, laugh with, and to develop a friendship with.
Perception tends to be that this kind of friendship requires a huge commitment from a volunteer, but new and exciting programs require a dedication of as little as an hour a week.
School based mentoring programs have been operating throughout the County for almost 8 years, and the program is now expanding to include a new Go Girls mentoring program as well as music mentoring, tutoring, sports programs and so much more.
Results from research by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada shows that Mentoring makes a “Big” difference in the lives of children who participate in the programs.
- 88% of students showed improved literacy skills
- 64% had developed higher levels of self-esteem
- 89% of kids felt better about themselves
The impact is felt by the volunteers too;
- 90% of mentors saw a positive change in the child they were mentoring
- 85% of ISM volunteers feel they have a positive influence on the community
Volunteers come from all walks of life, some are students wanting their volunteer hours, some are taking their lunch hour from work to spend time with a child, and some are sharing their retirement time as a way of giving back to the community they care about. Regardless of age or background, it can be a life changing experience seeing a child develop and flourish simply because someone cared.
Funding can also be a challenge for this small agency, which does not receive government funding. Combining funds from the United Way, special events, and their thrift store all help make these programs grow. Individual and corporate donations are also welcome, and tax receipts can be provided. A new Major Gift Campaign is underway, and recognition plans are available.
