By mid-August it is hoped a 'Green Space' will have been created for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County.

The space, located at the back of their building on William Street East in Smiths Falls, currently features pavement and graffiti. But a group of participants from the Katimavik program have big plans for the lot and a vision which will see it become a welcoming haven.

The group, which has recently left Smiths Falls heading for British Columbia, have come up with blueprints detailing plans for the just ovr 300 square feet of space. The plans call for the pavement to be pulled up, privacy fencing, a treed area, an area for a patio, a space for planting herbs, and a mural is planned as well.

The actual physical work of making these plans a reality is now in the capable hands of the next Katimavik group coming to the community. Katimavik offers Canadians between 17 and 21 years old the opportunity to participate in an intensive six or nine months of volunteer services.

The intentions are to have work begin the last week of July, with a completion expected mid-August. Rona Cashway in Smiths Falls has also jumped on board, raising over $200 through barbecues they have held for the cause. They are also providing mentorship.

"The mentors are in place to teach the next group (Katimavik participants) what they need to do to get the job done." Miller noted during the planning meeting held July 15.

It is expected the project will likely cost over $1,000 to complete.

BBBS is currently seeking a donation of a patio for their new space and work boots. Safety boots will be required for workers as the project is underway.
