The sun was shining as 140 golfers took to the greens at Mapleview on Saturday for the annual Golf for Kids tournament, held in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County.

The fun filled day of golf raises funds that directly support mentoring programs the agency offers right here in Lanark County. The agency is not funded by the government, so counts on fundraisers such as this one to maintain its programs.

Tim Horton's locations in Perth and downtown Smiths Falls provided a generous continental breakfast for golfers to start their day, while they perused the extensive silent auctions, with items donated by many local businesses. Agency volunteer Ruth Anne Johnson organized the auction, and items ranged from a tool box to paintings and gift certificates.

Many businesses in Lanark County supported the event through hole sponsorship, prize and silent auction donations, or putting in teams. "Without local businesses supporting our events, we couldn't continue with our programming," syas Jennifer Miller, Executive Director. "The community rallies behind us, and we truly appreciate the support we receive, whether its for our Golf Day, Bowl for Kids, our Curling, or our Dart events. Every dollar raised makes a difference, and it is appreciated."

The agency covers all of Lanark County and is currently serving almost 200 children through various mentoring programs in Carleton Place, Almonte, Perth, Smiths Falls, Lanark, and surrounding communities. This number is a significant jump from four years ago when it was serving just over 50 children. With demand for service constantly increasing, events such as the golf tournament become more important than ever. As a not for profit organization, the agency does not receive any sustainable government funding, so relies on the support of volunteers, their thrift store, the United Way, and various grants to operate their popular and valuable mentoring programs.
